Design Competition

Women in Engineering (WIE) Day is an one-day program to encourage pre-college women to investigate careers in engineering or computer science. It is an interactive workshop with hands-on activities, an engineering panel, lab tours, lunch and more!

The 2009 Women in Engineering Day will be held on Friday, November 6, in the Idaho Commons Summit Room at the University of Idaho in Moscow.

WHO can come to WIE DAY?
WIE DAY is open to female students, grades 10-12, who have been nominated by a high school teacher or counselor based on their academic strengths and interests in math and science. Teachers are also invited to attend and learn more about introducing young women to the possibilities within engineering.

WHAT will I be doing at WIE DAY?
WIE DAY gives you an introduction to the myths and realities of being a female engineer. The workshop includes a Question and Answer session with a panel of professional and student engineers, a design competition, and departmental tours of the University of Idaho's state of the art engineering labs. Many participants also take advantage of the opportunity to experience life on campus by arriving Thursday night and staying with student hosts in a residence hall or sorority.

HOW much will it cost?
There is no cost for the program - meals and housing (if you would like to stay on campus) will be provide.

WHEN does WIE DAY take place?
The 2009 WIE DAY will take place Friday, November 6. The day begins with breakfast at 8:00 a.m. and all activities will conclude by 3:00 p.m. The event will take place in the University of Idaho Commons, Summit Room, 4th Floor. If you are arriving on Friday please arrive by 7:45a.m. for registration.

This year the Society of Women Engineers is extending an invitation to all WEI participants to arrive Thursday evening, November 5 and enjoy Dinner with the Dean. This event is being held at the University Inn Best Western and is also free of charge. For those participants requesting to stay the night in a sorority/dorm, this is a great time to meet your host student and get to know some of the University of Idaho engineering staff. If you are planning on taking advantage of our on-campus housing experience, you will need to check-in at the University Inn Best Western between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 5.

WHERE do I get to go for WIE DAY?
The University of Idaho in Moscow is the home of Idaho's most comprehensive engineering program. With a 100-year history of educating engineers, the University of Idaho College of Engineering confidently offers traditional and multidisciplinary approaches to preparing our students for the future.

Moscow is a culturally-rich college town in the middle of a booming region. Our summers offer warm temperatures and rivers perfect for fishing or water sports. Our natural surroundings provide a global hub for environmental and agricultural research.

Our residential campus provides more than 25 student residence communities: four apartment communities, 18 fraternities and nine sororities that provide you with all the living options you'd expect from a leading university.

WHY should I come to WIE DAY?
At the end of the workshop, you will have much better idea of what it means to be a female engineer, and how you can use your strengths in math and science to help change the world!

HOW do I apply?
WIE DAY participants must be nominated by a high school teacher or counselor (2009 nomination form can be found below).

Invitational letters will be sent by October 20 with details of the conference, extracurricular events, and housing options.
