Research Highlights
Idaho Transportation Center Ranked Among Top in Nation
The National Institute for Advanced Transportation Technology at the University of Idaho was named a Tier 1 University Transportation Center (UTC) last week by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Research and Innovative Technology Administration. A total of 36 research universities from around the nation applied for Tier 1 funding. Idaho's NIATT was one of ten selected. The award provides funding of $1 million per year for a minimum of three years.

Academic Advancement
Senior Capstone Design Transitions Students to Hands-On Practice
While other students may compose papers or take tests for their final exams, engineering students are given hands-on experience through the Senior Capstone Design program. This program provides real world problems and the mentorship of students and faculty to transition from engineering coursework to engineering practice.

Young women from around the Northwest will experience engineering up close and person engineering Nov. 10 at the Women in Engineering event at the University of Idaho.

Alumni Update
University of Idaho Alumnus Named U.S. Assistant Secretary of Lands and Minerals
University of Idaho alumnus C. Stephen Allred, newly appointed Assistant Secretary of Lands and Minerals, will join his former boss at the U.S. Department of the Interior. Allred was confirmed earlier this month by unanimous consent in the Senate and will serve under Idaho's previous governor and now Interior Secretary, Dirk Kempthorne.

Idaho Engineering Alumnus Named Chief Executive Of Uefi Forum
Dong Wei, a University of Idaho electrical engineering graduate, was recently named Chief Executive Officer of the UEFI Forum, Inc., a non-profit industry standard organization supported by AMD, AMI, Apple, Dell, HP, IBM, Insyde, Intel, Lenovo, Microsoft and Phoenix. The organization aims to promote the next generation in pre-boot standard beyond BIOS in personal computers.
