Leading their field at an undergraduate level, civil engineering students Kristyn Scott, Lynelle Morelan, and Damien Wall attended the Association of State Dam Safety Officials Annual Conference in Austin, TX. "It is extremely rare for undergraduate students to have an accepted peer-reviewed publication, and they should be commended!" said Fritz Fiedler. They presented their senior design project entitled Modifying Low Head Dams for Safety, Function, and Play. The students submitted an abstract to present a poster about their project at the conference. After reading the abstract, conference organizers invited the students to write a full peer reviewed paper. The students' project is ongoing. It involves re-designing a low-head dam on Elkhorn Creek in Kentucky that has killed at least seven people. "The hydraulics downstream of traditional low-head dams are extremely dangerous," said Fritz. |
