Dear Friends,
What an exciting time to be a part of the College of Engineering! Already, 2007 has been filled with an abundance of excitement and the rest of it is sure to make this year one to remember.
Last week, I was in Egypt with Margrit VonBraun, the dean of the College of Graduate Studies. We are working with two institutions in Cairo to bring Ph.D. students to Idaho, one of the exciting ways we're working to make Idaho a truly global campus. These students will study engineering, business and science and provide other insights into our research and the impacts in Egypt and around the globe.
It has been a pleasure teaching a capstone 400 level electrical engineering class this spring. The quality of students at the University of Idaho consistently amazes me. Having the opportunity to interact with our students is such an energizing experience for me; one that helps recharge my batteries after a busy first few months.
In January, we began our centennial with kick-off events throughout Idaho and will continue the festivities with a variety of celebrations throughout the year. Hundreds of alumni and friends gathered in Coeur d'Alene, Moscow, Boise and Idaho Falls to celebrate this special occasion.
We're also deeply immersed in our strategic planning efforts for the college. Led by our faculty, this planning will help lay the groundwork for the next 100 years of engineering at Idaho. In the coming months, I'll share our plans and invite your feedback.
Through continuing our planning to evolve with our state and country, we're ensuring Idaho remains at the forefront of engineering education. The success of our efforts lies in continuing to recruit and retain top-notch faculty and researchers, reaching out to students from all regions and backgrounds, and working with our corporate partners to ensure they have the next generation of workforce necessary to replace our aging "Boomer" population.
Throughout our website, you will see the rich variety of programs and resources the College of Engineering offers. I invite you to explore it. We welcome the opportunity to display our bright community of faculty, students and staff, and our relentless commitment to excellence in research, education, and service.
Have a great spring!
